Shirley Chisholm Unbossed & Unbowed
Bernie Grant Arts Centre
This award-winning solo show tells the largely unheard story of Shirley Chisholm, a Brooklyn-born politician of immigrant parents from Guyana and Barbados, who in the 20th Century, was the first African American woman to win a seat in Congress and the first to run for President of the United States. They called her the Black Joan of Arc. She called herself Fighting Shirley as she faced off against the political machine in the name of justice. Join us for this immersive, interactive solo show where actress and playwright Ingrid Griffith portrays Shirley Chisholm and 15 other characters as she traces Shirley Chisholm’s journey from her childhood in Barbados to her rise in politics and activism in the United States.
