About the show

They name me Baby. Means you’ll never seem old, even when you are. You’ll always bring hope, even when there is none. And you can always pretend you’re wanted, even when you’re not…

Baby’s bright and beautiful. Baby’s trouble. Baby can do things nobody else can and why not? Britain’s got talent, hasn’t it? Baby’s had it tough and she wants to keep Bliss. That’s all she wants. But something terrible stands in her way.

Now Baby has to solve a problem… and you’re part of her solution. Because you’re proper people. You must be, to be reading this. Plus, there’s nobody else she can ask…

One woman, seventy minutes, and nobody else to ask

Baby is a one-woman play by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti, directed by Milli Bhatia and performed by Pearl Mackie — best known as Bill Potts in Doctor Who, and more recently seen in Grenfell: In the Words of Survivors and Ballet Shoes at the National Theatre. It is a co-production between Brixton House and Clean Break, the company that makes theatre with and about women who have experience of the criminal justice system.

Baby tells her own life story, straight out to the audience, from childhood to the present day: witty, sharp and at times confrontational. It is a play about poverty, motherhood and institutional failure — about a woman trying to build a life for herself and her daughter, Bliss, and about every service that was meant to help her and didn’t. She speaks directly to the room throughout, but there is no audience participation. You are asked to listen, and to carry her story out with you.

Content notice

Baby deals with difficult material. It contains criminalisation, imprisonment and probation; adverse childhood experiences including neglect and sexual abuse; separation of mother and child through imprisonment; foster care; sex work; abusive relationships; drug and alcohol use; and self-harm. Clean Break and Brixton House have published a self-care guide for Baby (PDF). It carries the full content notice list, grounding exercises for before, during and after the play, and contact details for organisations offering support. It is worth a look before you book.
